Unveiling the Mystery of Fatty Liver :-

Fatty liver , also known as hepatic steatosis , is a condition that has been on the rise in recent years. It is characterized by the accumulation of fat in the liver cells, which can impair liver function and lead to various health complications. In this blog post, we will hunt through into the world of fatty liver, exploring its causes, symptoms, and available treatment options.

Understanding Fatty Liver:

Fatty liver can be classified into two types:-

  1. AFLD (Alcoholic fatty liver disease) :-Primarily caused by excessive alcohol consumption
  2. NAFLD (Non Alcoholic fatty liver disease):- Now, we will discuss only about NAFLD because it covers major population

Risk Factors of NAFLD:-

  • Overweight and Obesity
  • Insulin Resistance , in which your cells don’t take up sugar in response to hormone insulin
  • High blood sugar(hyperglycemia) or Type 2 diabetes
  • High levels of fats, particularly triglycerides, in the blood.
  • Metabolic Syndrome , a group of biochemical and physiological abnormalities associated with the development of cardiovascular disease & type 2 diabetes
  • Sleep Apnea, a sleep disorder in which breathing repeatedly stops and starts.
  • Underactive thyroid (Hypothyrodism)
  • Underactive Pituitary Gland (Hypopituitarism)
  • Fatty liver cause constipation which in long term cause Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS).

This excess fat acts as a toxin to liver cells, causing liver inflammation , which may lead to a buildup of scar tissue in the liver & cause Liver Cirrhosis.

Symptoms of Fatty Liver :-

  1. Individual May Experience Fatigue
  2. Abdominal Discomfort
  3. Weight Loss or Gain
  4. Jaundice ( Yellowing of the skin and eyes)
  5. Swelling in the legs and ankles etc

Diagnosis and Complications:-

Fatty Liver can be diagnosed through various methods

  1. Blood Tests like CBC, LFT, SGOT,SGPT etc
  2. Imaging Techniques like Ultrasound or MRI and Liver biopsy.

If left untreated , fatty liver can progress to more severe conditions such as non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) , liver fibrosis ,cirrhosis, and even liver cancer. Therefore, early diagnosis and intervention are crucial.

Treatment and Lifestyle Changes:-

  1. Lifestyle Modification :- Adopting a healthy lifestyle is key to managing and preventing fatty liver. This includes:-

. Diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains and lean proteins

. Limiting Sugar ,Saturated fats ,& Processed foods

. Regular exercise and weight management

. Avoiding excessive alcohol consumption

2) Medication and Therapies :- Depending on the severity of the fatty liver disease , healthcare professionals may recommend certain medication :-

  1. To manage diabetes , cholesterol , & obesity
  2. Specific medication targeting liver fat accumulation and inflammation ,Ex – Ursodeoxycholic acid
